I notice a funny thing when clients come to my office to do business. They will hand me a business card with their info on it. Usually the card will have their name, their production company name or business name, their email and their website. So after we conduct business an they leave, I’ll hop on my computer and check out their website. Now here’s where the problem begins more than 80% of the people that hand me a business card with their website on it have no website. I go to the site, it either doesn’t exist or it just Godaddy.com holder page. I usually give them the benefit of the doubt and figure their just starting out. But I sometimes wait 6 months to a year and check their website URL later and the sites still don’t exist.
I think having info on your business card that doesn’t exist is very poor business and makes you look bad. It’s like your trying to fake it til you make it. I think it would be better to just leave it off until you build the site. There are so many posers out there and you have to weed through them or you end up wasting so much time. I used to own a studio and I worked with a lot of local recording artists. These artist would have some of the jankiest managers you could come across. They would ask the artists to pay for the studio session, they’d ask the artist for a ride to the studio, they’d ask the artists to help pay their rent and so on. I would sometimes wonder why these artists would have people trying to manage them, that couldn’t manage their on lives.
