Marketing Your Music (Indie Artist)
Tips and tricks for marketing your music as an indie artist
It isn’t easy for musicians to break through into the industry, that’s for sure, but it’s definitely easier today than it ever used to be in the past.
Sure, you are definitely going to be going up against much stiffer competition these days – and more of it, for that matter, thanks to the globalized nature of the entertainment industry today – but you have access to a lot of tools and technologies that independent artists in the past would have absolutely killed for.
And you need to make the most of them when it comes to marketing your music.
Take advantage of all these tips and tricks to really maximize your reach, maximize your opportunity, and hopefully catch the attention of people in the industry that can propel you to the kind of success you have always dreamed of.
Let your music BE your marketing
There are a lot of musicians out there that get caught up in marketing and advertising their gigs and the shows that they put on all the while forgetting that the main reason people listen to someone’s music is actually BECAUSE of the music itself!
You don’t ever want your sound, your voice, or your musical talent take a backseat to some kind of marketing or advertising push or you’re going to get steamrolled by major companies and labels that have much deeper pockets.
Take advantage of social media
You need to have a shotgun style approach to using the Internet when it comes to marketing your music, rather than just trying to set up a couple of songs on YouTube and hoping for the best.
You need to be active on Twitter, you need to have a dedicated Facebook Fan page, you should be on Sound Cloud, and you should be making the most of everything that Instagram and other social media platforms have to offer.
You need to be “out there” as much as possible – and with as much interconnection between platforms as you can muster – if you’re going to have any chance of catching the attention of enough people to propel you into the kind of success you’re dreaming of.
Take advantage of streaming media platforms, too
There are a lot of people that aren’t in love with the way that Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music, and all the rest treat independent artists, but right now – in your early stages – you need to be looking for exposure more than anything else.
Upload your tracks, get as many listens as you can, and then later down the line find ways to really monetize your effort and capitalize on the popularity you were able to drum up on these platforms.
